The increasing penetration of solar and wind generation creates frequency and voltage instability challenges for European transmission grids. This paper reviews balancing mechanisms, curtailment policies, and the emerging role of demand response in stabilising grids with over 40% variable renewable share.

Despite efficiencies exceeding 25%, perovskite photovoltaics have not yet reached commercial scale due to degradation under moisture, heat, and UV exposure. We survey encapsulation strategies, lead-free alternatives, and tandem architectures and estimate the technology readiness level for each approach.

Central Europe has limited geographic potential for new pumped hydro storage (PHS) sites, yet PHS remains the most cost-effective bulk storage technology. We perform a GIS-based siting analysis identifying 23 feasible sites with combined capacity of 14 GWh and model their contribution to seasonal energy balancing.

We model the capital and operational costs of a 500 MW offshore wind farm under four scenarios differing in turbine size, foundation type, and grid connection distance. Levelised cost of energy (LCOE) ranges from €68 to €94 per MWh, with turbine size being the dominant cost driver.
